Radio jock in bid to save Bhopal landmark

India’s 17-station network 94.3 MY FM recently undertook an awareness campaign to get the Bhojtal Lake in Bhopal – the capital city of the country’s largest state, Madhya Pradesh – cleaned up.

Asia’s biggest manmade lake, Bhojtal is a big tourist attraction, providing livelihood to more than 500 families and water to almost 40 per cent of Bhopal’s population.

Over the years, it was over exploited and attention from the public as well as the authorities was needed to sort the issue.

The campaign, ‘Swacch Taal Swacch Bhopal’ (Clean lake, Clean Bhopal), was led by RJ Prameesh who jailed himself in the boat house at the lake and refused to go back to the studio till 94,300 people across Bhopal signed a pledge to save it.

State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and local politicians also joined the cause, asking the audience to come forward.

Mr Harrish M Bhatia, CEO, MY FM said: “Being a responsible FM channel we believe in entertainment with education. The concept of edutainment in a form of campaign has helped us gain around 94,450 signatures to save the lake.”
