Radio Bike Lane bets on crowdfunding cash

Singapore’s telecom giant StarHub has decided to help fund a Radio Bike Lane project with its crowdfunding site Crowdivate, reports Tech in Asia.

With rising concerns about cyclists’ safety in Singapore, a group of cycling enthusiasts has come up with a low cost FM transmitter that warns drivers whenever they move too close to a cyclist.

The device, attached to a bicycle, “hijacks” a nearby car’s radio to broadcast a warning message and reportedly works with 90 percent radio stations in the country.

Radio Bike Lane project was one of 12 ideas selected from 400 entries and Singapore’s largest broadcaster MediaCorp, has already reportedly pledged to come on board as a media partner.

Singapore has a sizable cycling community but no cycle lanes and accidents involving cyclists have drawn much public attention in recent years

Earlier in April this year, 24-year old National Serviceman Chia Wee Kiak died from serious head injuries after falling off his bicycle at OCBC Cycle Singapore event.

The project’s campaign page will go live soon.
