Public Service Broadcasting Day marks Gandhi’s only visit to All India Radio

India’s public broadcaster, All India Radio (AIR) remembered a visit by Mahatma Gandhi to its studios on Monday.

Also known as Father of the Nation, Gandhi made his first and only address from AIR on November 12, 1947. The day was declared as the Jan Prasaran Diwas (Public Service Broadcasting Day) in 2000.

Gandhi had decided to address refugees from Pakistan housed in a camp in Kurukshetra who were facing trauma and suffering caused by the partition of India through radio, as he could not visit them.

His opening words from the studios of Broadcasting House were ‘Main ek anjan purush hoon’ (I am an anonymous man).

He narrated his experience to newspaper correspondents, describing microphone broadcasting in his speech as “a wondrous thing”, a manifestation of Shakti and of “the miraculous power of God”.

A snippet of the speech was played as a mark of respect and tribute to him.

The broadcaster also acknowledged Gandhi for showing the meaning and purpose of 'BahujanHitaya and BahujanSukhaya' (Benefit to all, happiness to all), which is also AIR’s motto.
