Public radio workers ‘not been paid for months’

500 employees of India’s national broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) have allegedly not been paid for more than four months, reports The Times of India.

Presenters and other staff at AIR FM Gold and AIR FM Rainbow claim they are yet to be paid close to $160,000 (Rs 10 million) in salaries since June.

The employees’ anxiety is compounded by the festive season which has just begun, but they have not received any explanation about the delay.

One employee alleges that the irregularities in payment began last year when a group of 25 employees complained about incidents of sexual harassment by senior AIR management.

A high-level committee then suspended the involved officials but they were reinstated later.

When asked about the issue, AIR Director General F.Sheheryar told The Times of India: “I wouldn’t be aware which station is paying whom and when.”

Media regulator Prasar Bharati’s principal advisor VAM Hussain told the publication that he was unaware of the details but would intervene.
