Philippines police criticised over radio raid

Police in the Philippines have been accused of using “excessive force” in a raid on a radio station in Iloilo city on Sunday.

The early hours operation, which saw a SWAT team train their guns on journalists, technicians and a security guard, was captured on CCTV cameras.

Akyson Radyo employees were told to strip off their clothes and were subjected to body searches, according to a joint statement by two Philippines media organisations.

They were then made to crawl out of the station building at gunpoint.

The website InterAksyon reports that police were allegedly in pursuit of armed suspects involved in a nearby disturbance.

Media groups described the raid as a “virtual attack on freedom of the press”.

Police say their officers followed “standard operating procedure”.
