New studios at Radio Republik Indonesia

Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) has recently revamped its studios to take advantage of new technology and open up the space to stimulate new work flows.

Andi Permadi, the Head of Digital, took AsiaRadioToday’s Steve Ahern on a tour of the new studios.

Sitting in the main studio is an unusual experience because there is no broadcast desk, there are only three glass topped bar tables and high stools with mics and headphones on them. They are facing a playout screen and enable the presenters to interact with each other in a natural environment, rather than across a mixing desk.

In the main picture Steve talks to Andi at the desks. The only other furniture in the glass walled studio are comfortable lounge chairs on the other side of the room.

The studio concept itself is innovative, as is the configuration of other areas around then mains studio.

Behind the main studio is a walkway, which divides the studio from another more traditional studio behind it, and the production room which can see both studios.

Behind the production room is the digital news studio, which also faces a tv studio with green screen and cameras and a vision switching booth attached to it.

News, production and presentation teams can all see and talk to each other. Live social media video and audio feeds are brought in via the production areas and switched to then studios, so presenters can see the feeds, and also fed to the streaming output on the RRI website and apps.

The layout is something like this.

“We have three studios which can handle audio and video. We network the audio and video to and from 95 stations. We also bring in reporters from their mobile phones so you can listen and watch at the same time…

“We use the glass to talk and give signs to each other all the time… If there is a demonstration near here the producer will give us a signal that there is a live reporter coming in to us.

Permadi walks around the studios to show the devices being used in each studio and explains the equipment and its use in the video below.
