HK radio relicensing: public views sought

Hong Kong’s media regulator, the Communications Authority (CA)has begun the process of readvertising the broadcasting licenses of two of the territory’s leading broadcasters.

A two-month public consultation exercise is underway for Metro Broadcast Corporation Limited (Metro) and Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company Limited (CRHK).

Metro runs Metro Finance (FM104), Metro Info (FM99.7), Metro Plus (AM 1044) as well as three DAB radio channels.  CRHK runs three terrestrial stations including FM 88.1 and CR2 FM 90.3.

Metro and CRHK were granted 12 year licenses in July 2003, which are due to expire in August 2016.  Both the broadcasters have applied for a renewal.

The CA will also take into account public views to assess the broadcasters’ performance against various statutory and license requirements.

The regulatory body will make its recommendations by May 2015 in accordance with the country’s telecommunications ordinance.

To help the public give its views, the CA has published an information booklet with the networks’ details which may be collected at district offices of the Home Affairs Department .

Two public hearings will be held at Leighton Hill Community Hall and Mei Foo Community Hall from 7 pm to 9 pm on October 9 and 30 respectively.
