China to build emergency radio system

China is to build an emergency radio broadcasting system to deal with disasters.

Experts say the country is missing a comprehensive system that can warn the public about extreme weather and help in the rescue and relief effort following major disasters.

According to Chinese media, several government departments will help construct the system including the state radio broadcaster China National Radio.

It is expected to be up and running by the end of 2015.

Following a magnitude 7.0 quake in China’s Sichuan province in April, a small-scale radio service was set up to broadcast emergency information on AM frequencies and via loudspeaker.
