Changes to Myanmar state broadcaster soon, says DG

The head of Myanmar’s state broadcaster says he hopes to transform the service into a full public service organisation by 2015.

In an interview with The Irrawaddy, Tint Swe who is Director-General of Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) says he would like the project to be complete by the time national elections take place in the same year.

Until last year, Tint Swe was the head of the country’s censorship board, which saw Myanmar – also known as Burma – rank at the bottom of media freedom indexes.

Parliament has yet to fully debate the public service media bill due to a busy legislation calendar following the transition from military dictatorship to democracy over the past two years.

Tint Swe said he hoped the bill would be discussed “in the next session of Parliament”.

Myanmar’s Interim Press Council has criticised the proposed legislation saying it doesn’t set down guidance for the media to operate by.

MRTV runs two national radio services Myanmar Radio and the Myanmar Radio minorities service.

Several other stations exist, including Yangon City FM and Paddamya FM, but are all currently under state management.
