Being yourself on air #RDE18

Breakfast at my Place with Claudia Stockl has been going for over 20 years.

She presents an indepth interview style show which really likes to find out about her invited guests before going on air.

Why does it work for her? “If it’s exciting for you then it’s exciting for the listeners” she said.

Her advice is that broadcasters should want to know about each guest, to exhibit a curiosity which shows as being genuine.

“A good interview is not having a PR question to allow them to promote their own agenda… I like to surprise them with anything other than, how are you today”.

Claudia says preparation is paramount and her very important words of wisdom are:

  • She’ll ask for three contacts of guests that she can use to learn about them
  • First question she will always ask a surprise one rather than how are you?
  • Art of interviewing is to listen to the ‘side’ sentences and elaborate on them
  • With a smile you can ask many questions
  • Listen more so than talking

Andy Knoll has been a guest of Stockl's and in days gone by, he asked himself; am l interesting enough to be interviewed?

He found that Stockl drills like a dentist and has great preparation. Almost a therapeutic experience, he stated, which he feels made him sound more interesting.

Andy had a bit wild crazy, unformulated style and started at the bottom of the heap.He was able to play whatever he wanted and be creative in the studio without much input from anyone else. He believes a whole generation was killed off by being forced into a regulated industry.

His advice to new starters:

  • Try find a small station and try different ways and find out who you are
  • Social media assists youngsters with instant feedback and helps their style and development
