AIR’s Vividh Bharti switches to FM in Chennai

India’s national broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) has placed its Vividh Bharti channel in Chennai on FM mode in order to reach a larger audience, reports Radioandmusic.com.

Inaugurated on October 3, 1957 on a 100 KW shortwave transmitter, the channel had been broadcasting on medium wave through a 20 KW transmitter.

The new channel will broadcast on 100.5 Mhz and will be available in a radius of 35 km, which will eventually be increased to 70 km.

The 33rd Vividh Bharati station to go on FM mode in the country, it was launched by the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavardhan Rathore.

Speaking at the occasion, Rathore said that FM covers nearly 45 percent of the country AIR is moving towards increasing it to nearly 65 per cent in the next two-and-a-half years.
