Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) is organising the 2019 Pacific Media Partnership Conference (PMPC) in Apia, Samoa, from 5-7 August. The meeting is hosted by Samoa Broadcasting Corporation Limited.
The PMPC will focus on Pacific Islands broadcasting and new media issues acting as a bridge with ABU members throughout the Asia and globally.
This year's theme, Safeguarding Tomorrow: Building media sustainability in the Pacific will be examined from different perspectives including:
- Creating robust broadcasting organisation strong enough to withstand the damaging forces of change while still being agile enough to adapt and advance.
- Giving audiences the new programming they crave, without destroying the old and the traditional.
- Building honest, reliable and trusted news services in an era of fake news and reckless social media.
- Technical transitioning – knowing what technologies to retain, what to pursue and what to discard.
- How Pacific Islands broadcasters can respond practically to communities experiencing transformation and disintegration.
- In the face of climate change denialism, apathy and limited resources, what Pacific Islands media can contribute to preserving a liveable planet for our grandchildren and their grandchildren.
There will be four main sessions on: Building Stronger Organisations, Programming and Content, New Technologies and Responding to Social Challenges. All the sessions are aimed at improving resilience in a time of rapid change so organisations can withstand the shocks that lie ahead.
The PMPC will be a mix of formal conference sessions, showcases and practical workshops. These are not designed to include only specialists in those areas but will be open to every conference delegate.
It is a great opportunity for ABU Members in the Pacific Islands to keep up-to-date with new developments right across the media – radio, television and online. It is an excellent platform for mutually beneficial exchange of information, experiences, lessons learned, case studies and most of all member-to-member networking.
