ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium to feature 15 workshops

 

Fifteen workshops on a wide range of topics will be a key element of the ABU Digital Broadcasting Symposium 2016 from February 29 to March 3 in Kuala Lumpur.

The symposium, with the theme ‘Innovating Digital Connections’, is the 12th in a series of annual symposiums staged by the ABU to help radio and television broadcasters and the industry.

Among the workshop sponsors is the DBS’ principal sponsor, WorldDAB, which will present a half-day workshop on 29 February on ‘Moving Forward with DAB+’.

It will feature international developments on DAB+, new technical developments on DAB+ including mobile phone integration, building blocks for success – the European Broadcasting Union’s Digital Radio Toolkit, Norway’s now ongoing FM switch-off – among others.

Other workshop sponsors include Ahern Media & Training’s ‘Story Telling in Sound’, where Steve Ahern  will explore new concepts of telling stories in sound and creating attractive soundscapes.

There will also be workshops by DVB, The Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA), EMC Corporation, Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), Rohde & Schwarz, Caton Technology, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

In addition, Dolby will hold a special series of five workshops on ‘Next Generation Audio & Video Experience for Broadcast & OTT’, spread over two days. These sessions will include live demonstrations of advanced audio and video techniques and technologies.

DVB’s workshop titled The Future of TV will focus on the latest development and future directions for DTT and UHD beyond the more pixels.

The full-day ‘Preserving Heritage Archives’ workshop will deal with the ‘Management and Digitisation of Audio-Video Archives for Broadcasters’.

The Workshop on New Developments in Audio Content Production organised by ABU Programming will expose radio and TV sound creators, sound recordists and technical professionals to new developments in audio content creation.

Fraunhofer’s ‘Immersive Sound Creation’ will lay out the concept of ‘object based production’ where the immersive effect of soundscape is captured and reproduced without specific microphone and loud speaker positions.

Korea Radio Promotion Association (RAPA)’s workshop is titled Korea’s UHD broadcasting Service. Presentations in this workshop are on Korea’s policy to vitalize UHD broadcasting, world’s first terrestrial UHD broadcasting in Korea and trends in UHD broadcasting equipment.

EMC Corporation will present on ‘Designing a Cloud-enabled Infrastructure for your Media Digital Transformation’ which will go into depth on the requirements for a digital transformation, showing new architectures for cloud enabled media technology infrastructure and investigating the sizing and alternative options for long-term media archives. Integrating this directly into a modern file-based workflow built on Media Asset Management applications will equip your company with the tools needed to compete in 2016 and beyond.

The Digital Radio Mondiale Workshop titled ‘DRM-For Full and Efficient Country Coverage’ will feature presentations from Fraunhofer, Nautel, Ampegon and the DRM Consortium.

The Workshop sponsored by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation will look into the topic of ‘Advanced Technologies for Digital Inclusion.’
