12-year-olds grab the Oli mic for junior DJ hunt

Singapore’s Tamil station Oli 96.8FM saw 50 students audition for its recent junior DJ hunt.

The trials were held at the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) auditiorium last Saturday.

Programme Director Vinod Kumar M said he wanted to “discover, train and nurture the next batch of radio super stars.”

He says the DJ hunt offered a chance to introduce children – just reaching secondary age – to the media business in a fun and relaxed way.

Students were asked to present a one minute intro of themselves and then prepare a talk set with another aspiring DJ and then introduce a well-known Tamil song.

Vinod sees them starting their radio careers presenting children’s shows, receiving mentoring and training from senior DJs at the station.

Oli 96.8FM, owned by MediaCorp, serves Singapore’s Tamil speaking community.

Tamil is one of four official languages and is spoken by about two thirds of Indians, which make up more than 9 percent of the population.
