Multicultural Affairs Minister Gary Hardgrave has written to Ethnic Broadcasters reminding them of their “responsibilities” in covering the hot issues of terrorism, refugees and ethnic minorities. (Read his letter in the NEWS section)

Is he trying to bully broadcasters? Is he attempting to stifle public debate? Or is this a timely warning?

Why are ethnic broadcasters singled out? Did a warning also go to ABC and Commercial broadcasters who are talking about these issues all the time?

Is radio, in general, helping to moderate public fear and anger, or is it fuelling it (thereby playing into the terrorists’ hands) and creating more tension between communities? Is it Radio’s job to simply reflect existing attitudes – no matter how misinformed – or should we try to drive the social agenda?
