The president of community broadcaster, FBi, Cassandra Wilkinson, certainly knows how to hold an audience – not just in the Sydney market against astronomically better resourced competitors, but with a confronting address to delegates at the recent ABA conference.
First she tells them that community broadcasters are much better at delivering local content than commercial operators. “To [commercial broadcasters] Australian content is a secondary activity behind making a profit. To us it is a primary activity – we are passionate about it,” said Wilkinson.
And then she fires a broadside at her own colleagues. Predicting that, “Community radio is poised for leaps in professionalism and content,” she also suggests that those community stations who don’t perform to her standards should have their licenses reviewed.
As Frontline’s Mike More would say “Hmmm”. What do you say? And from which side of the commercial/community fence do you say it?
