How stressful is Radio?

Over recent months, radioinfo has looked more like an obituary column than a Radio news website. Sadly we have lost at least half a dozen of our industry’s finest talent in a relatively short space of time – most of them way too young to have died and in the circumstances in which they did. Could stress be a contributing factor?

If you apply for a life insurance policy, it’s a sobering thought that when you tell them that you work in radio, most insurance companies will put you in the highest risk category, right up there with three pack a day smokers and rodeo clowns. And if you smoke too, the premiums go off the charts.

According to the actuaries who calculate the odds of having to shell out on a policy before they’ve realised a profit on it, people working in media and advertising are among the worst risks due to the stress of their day to day jobs. By comparison, those who work in a far more physically dangerous workplace, such as brikkies are at less risk of illness because they have little stress at work and have the benefit of excersise while Radio people sit on their bums most of the day.

Is Radio a more stressful industry in which to work than others? If so why, what makes it that way? What can the industry do to alleviate it?
