Do Aussie artists get a fair shake from Radio?

We wouldn’t have brought the subject up again – we’ve covered it several times before in this forum – except that it was brought up, again, on the weekend by veteran music promoter Michael Chugg who was delivering a keynote address at Adelaide’s Fuse Festival when he told The Advertiser that Aussie radio stations were failing to nurture the wealth of talent with which they were presented.”

Is he right?

Is Austereo’s introduction of a dedicated digital station like Radar not enough. Or Nova’s new music initiatives such as I Am With The Band? Not to mention the ongoing efforts to promote local artists at triple j.

The Advertiser reader poll which posed the question Should radio play more Aussie music?” Was running at around 85% in the affirmative at time of writing.

Mr Chugg also said, “It’s weird because some of these new acts from overseas like Bruno Mars and Adam Lambert get picked up and played, why don’t the Australian acts get played?

“They’re making up their Australian content with retro music. It’s a real worry when you look at our charts and there’s no Australian records in there,” said Mr Chugg.

So where does the truth lie? Is Radio dragging the chain or is the record industry failing to provide suitable material?
