A new private radio station named Cheragh has commenced broadcasting in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province.
The station, which operates on 90.9 FM, also reaches remote districts of the province. It will broadcast 18 hours a day in its initial phase, offering around 20 programs each week on a variety of topics.
Hayat Khan Hemat, the station’s manager, announced during the opening ceremony that Cheragh will feature political, news, Islamic, cultural, and educational programming.
Hamidullah Hashimi, head of information at the Department of Information and Culture, said: “Since the return of the Islamic Emirate, many new radios have opened in Kandahar. With the opening of Cheragh Radio, the number of active stations has reached 15. We hope more media outlets will become active in the future.”
Ahmad Ludin, head of the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee in the south, said: “The quality of some media outlets is not good, and their broadcasts are unprofessional. This should be addressed, and priority should be given to professional human resources.”
Religious scholar Waliullah Zahin added: “Society has the right that we work for its reform and present content to the younger generation that brings positive change.”
