Where has all the talent gone?

This forum is never short of posts bemoaning the diminishing job opportunities in radio since the big networks have taken over all but a few of the old independent “corner store” operators.

Yet there have never been more ads for announcing positions in the radioinfo employment section than in recent weeks. And some of them sound pretty desperate. After advertising for “bozos” last month, now Sydney’s Triple M is trying to goad the locals in to action by appealing to the Kiwis to fill the Aussie talent void. You can bet they’ll bite at that!

From the tiniest regional markets, happy to give a promising newcomer a shot, to the most successful metro stations, they lament that competent and talented people are as hard to find as Osama bin Laden’s hideout.

So what gives? Why the sudden dearth of talent? Where have all the young jocks gone? There are plenty of radio schools with plenty of pupils eager for their chance behind a mike. Are the entry requirements too high? You tell us.
