Let Stalk About Sex Baby…

It started sometime back in the late 60s or early 70s. As Radio Announcers became Disc Jockeys and later Jocks and Jockettes, standards in speech began to decline and the double entendre became de rigeur.

Up until then the airwaves were sacrosanct. After all, kiddies and their mums, little old ladies, vicars and others with the time to complain to authorities, could be listening at any given moment.

Ironically, it was the ABC, long considered the champion of Queen’s English that first made a habit of dropping the “F” word through it’s renegade offspring, JJJ. Today, a presenter is more likely to be suspended for making racist remarks than sexual ones.

Is this how it should be or has radio abandoned its duty of care to its listeners? Who should set the standards and how high should they be? Or doesn’t anybody give a f**k anymore?
